Public engagement and community involvement have become increasingly important for academic researchers as they not only define the relationship between academia and the wider community but also orientate academic research and enhance the role of universities. However, there is a wide range of definitions for these terms, each one having its own implications on orientations and practices assumed. Therefore, increasing our understanding of the range of ways “public engagement” and “community involvement” may be understood, seems to be imperative.
Welcome to International Modern Perspectives on Academia and Community Today (IMPACT).
IMPACT is an online peer-reviewed open access journal, founded in June 2019 at Queen’s University Belfast and published biannually. As an open-access journal, IMPACT is committed to the dissemination and accessibility of knowledge, to a global readership and enhancement of the dialogue between different academic disciplines and between academia and all sections of the community. The journal aims to initiate conversations which will lead to innovative research ideas and partnerships for providing solutions to real-world problems.
This inclusivity stems from an understanding that solutions to local and global challenges posed in the modern world can only be found by equally considering work undertaken in the various academic disciplines alongside the perspectives and experiences of people in their community environments. While there is a need for the community to participate actively in the academic dialogue, there is also a pressing need for academia to become more inclusive and responsive towards community needs. IMPACT crosses borders and boundaries, to enhance dialogue between academic disciplines, and between academia and community by hosting submissions from academics, students and community. Please note that while the word “Modern” for the purposes of this journal refers to current advancements, historical perspectives are not precluded.
Call for Papers - Issue 2
IMPACT is now open to submissions from any field on the theme Sustainability and Social Responsibility in Community Engagement, from:
- academics and university staff;
- students of academic institutions;
- community partners or institutions; and
- aspiring university community partners.
Sustainability, broadly speaking, can be defined as the ability of a system to maintain its balance over a long period of time in order to tackle challenges or threats. Social responsibility, on the other hand, is usually employed to evoke ethical obligations to ensure the benefit and prosperity of society. Currently, various approaches on how sustainability can be achieved have been suggested. One of the most renowned efforts is the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focusing on quality education, gender equality, climate change, good health and well-being, and partnerships for achieving the goals, among others.
However, perspectives on sustainability and the role that community engagement can play in achieving it are still lacking. It has been well argued that solutions to local and global challenges can only be found through the collaborative work of different academic disciplines, and through partnerships between academia and communities. In other words, solutions can only be achieved when all stakeholders work together. However, it is still unclear how such work can effectively be undertaken in sustainable ways. More specifically: What types of partnerships can be established? How can we implement effective interventions and how can we assess whether or not the interventions are effective? How can social responsibility in community engagement be promoted and nurtured both in academia and community and in the shared initiatives?
Therefore, the theme of the call for submission for our second issue aims to:
- Discuss the role of community engagement in achieving sustainability and social responsibility;
- Provide discussions on different viewpoints, theories and models on sustainability and social responsibility in community engagement;
- Explore the dynamic interactions between sustainability and social responsibility in community engagement, from academic and community-based perspectives;
- Investigate current approaches to facilitate sustainability and social responsibility; and
- Encourage new studies on SDGs and the role of social responsibility in community engagement to achieve these goals.
The deadline for submission on this theme is 30 September 2021. To initiate your submission please register.
In conjunction with this, IMPACT welcomes submissions all year round focused on the enhancement of dialogue between different academic disciplines, and between academia and all sections of the community. IMPACT strongly encourages academic and community-based submissions.
